26 usms.org 26 usms.org SETTING THE WEDGE Setting the wedge is a simpler process if you’re able to stand on the bottom of the pool and reach it, but because most competition pools are deep, having a step-by-step process to get set is best. The backstroke wedge retracts automatically once there’s no pres- sure on it, so you must always have a body part in contact with it when setting the device. (Note: These instructions are specific to the Colorado Time Systems version used. Wedges produced by other companies might have differ- ent designs that require swimmers to perform different actions to use.) Step 1 After entering the pool, pull the lever toward you to unlock the device. Step 2 With one hand on the block or side of the pool for stability, use your free hand to pull the wedge down to the desired level and hold it there. This should be a single motion. 1 2 3
